Thornbury Castle

An early Tudor Manor house, built in 1511 for Edward Stafford, 3rd Duke of Buckingham. After his death, the castle was confiscated by King Henry VIII who stayed here for 10 days with Queen Anne Boleyn. In 1554 the castle was again given to the Stafford family, but it fell into disrepair after the Civil War. Afterwhich it was renovated by the Howard family.

The Old Bell Hotel

Built on the remains of the outbuildings of Malmesbury Abbey, The Old Bell Hotel is the oldest existing hotel in England. The foundations of the building date back to 1220 and used to be the Abbey’s Guest House.
In the 15th century the guest house was extended on the east side. The current roofline and dormers were added in the 17th century. In the 19th century another extension was added on the west side.
In 2021 the hotel (and nearby Abbey House Gardens) are bought by Whim Hospitality of Texas and received a full renovation of the interiors.
